DARTS IN SEWING.

I don't really like sewing darts because I get tired especially when I am adding lining to a fabric. But I have come to discover that they are very necessary if you want fit on your dresses.
A dart is  a folded wedge or tuck, made by folding a part of the fabric inwards and stitching it. They are mostly found in women's clothing and are used to give fitting to a dress or garment which is their functional purpose. They can also help to bring out a design in a garment.
The main parts in dart are the top, center and or bottom. The wideness of the center determines the fit of the dress. There are different types of darts used in dress making such as;

Plain dart
It is the most common type of dart and the first to learn. They can either be on the bust or waist. It is preferable to use this on light fabrics or if you want to make a loose garment.

Bust dart
This is found at the bust as the name implies and helps gives fitting to the garment so there is no excess fabric hanging at the underarm.

Princess dart
These type starts at the waist or under bust (the bottom of the dart in front as in simple darts) and ends at the bust area on the side. I prefer to use this on a thick fabric and also if you are making a fitted dress.

French darts
These begin at the bust point (nipple point) and ends at the waist (side). They appear similar to bust darts, are very flattering and gives fitting to a dress.

Dart tucks
Some part of the dart are left open while the rest is closed up. It gives the garment a sort of professional look with a pleated appearance.

Elbow darts
These provide ease in the elbow part of the sleeve and gives a fitted and smart appearance. It may be single or multiple.

Double pointed darts
If you watched the part two of my bodice construction video, the dart I made on the cardboard is a simple and plain dart.
These type of darts are found in one piece dresses where there are no joining at the waist. They have an apex, a bottom (other apex) and two sharp edges at the side (centre of dart).

Curved darts
They are similar to and sewn same way as plain darts, only they are curved.

That's it sewistas and fashion lovers. There are also many more types of darts - Google is your best friend😉.
Remember, if a dart has just one apex and a widest part, beging your sewing from the widest part to the apex. But if it is like the double pointed dart, start from the apex, to the side point and then to the bottom (other apex).

As always,
Make your stitches and love your dresses.

Till next time,
'Cisca O.
